What is a Schengen Visa and Do You Need One?
The Schengen visa allows Nepali citizens to travel freely within the 29 Schengen Area countries for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. It is a short-stay visa — not a work or study permit. Romania joined the Schengen Area in January 2024, which means a Romanian Schengen visa now grants access to the broader European zone. If you are planning to work in Romania, you need a work visa — not a Schengen visa. AMC Nepal helps you understand exactly which visa applies to your situation before you apply for anything.
What the Schengen Visa Covers
- Short-term tourism and leisure travel — up to 90 days
- Business trips — meetings, conferences, trade fairs
- Family visits — visiting relatives in a Schengen country
- Initial exploratory visits before committing to a longer stay
- Transit through a Schengen country en route to another destination
Frequently Asked Questions — Romanian Work Visa
Ans: No. A Schengen visa is a short-stay travel visa only — it does not permit you to work in any Schengen country. Working in Romania requires a Romanian Type D work visa, which is a completely separate process. If you apply for a Schengen visa intending to work, your application will be refused and future applications may be affected. Contact AMC Nepal to make sure you are applying for the correct visa type.
Ans: You will typically need: a valid passport (minimum 3 months validity beyond your intended stay, issued within the last 10 years), completed Schengen application form, recent EU-standard passport photos, confirmed travel itinerary, proof of accommodation, travel insurance with minimum €30,000 coverage, bank statements for the last 3 to 6 months, proof of ties to Nepal (employment letter, property or family) and the visa fee. AMC Nepal helps you organize your supporting documents and ensure your application tells a clear, consistent story.
Ans: Yes — Romania joined the Schengen Area in January 2024. This means that a Romanian Schengen visa grants access to all 29 Schengen countries. However, note that Cyprus — another destination AMC Nepal prepares candidates for — is an EU member but is NOT part of Schengen. Cyprus has its own separate visa requirements.
Ans: The most common reasons are: weak proof of financial means, unclear purpose of travel, insufficient ties to Nepal (the embassy needs to see that you intend to return), incomplete documentation or inconsistencies between documents. AMC Nepal reviews your full package before you submit to make sure none of these issues apply to your application.
